trws_adminTraining

Yes, it’s that time of year again! Track season is baaaaaaacckk!!!! If you are reading this more than likely you are looking for a good spike for your 2022 track season.  At The Running Well Store we offer a wide variety of track and field spikes. If you are in need of help deciding which spike to choose, read on…..or come to one of our 3 stores in the greater Kanas City area and speak to one of our Gurus, who would be more than happy to help you out!

Most customers come in and ask the question-Do I need to wear spikes if I’m only running track in Middle or High School? The Gurus at The Running Well Store will tell you that using a spike for your track event will help you to run faster,  jump higher or farther. Even though there are over 44 events at most track meets, almost everyone can use just one set of spikes for multiple events.

Read on to learn more about the wide variety of  track & field spikes that we carry at The Running Well Store.

Sprint Spikes

The lightest running shoe on the market they are designed to put the runner on their toes, leaving them with little to no cushioning at the heels and usually quite stiff on the bottom and have no padding. The spike plate at the front will have the maximum number of pins to take more force and provide as much grip as possible. For short distances at speed, sprinting spikes are best for 100m or 200m dash, the 4x100m or 4x200m  relays. We would recommend that an athlete not use their sprint spikes for any jumping events, hurdles, or for any distances longer than 1 lap.

#supplychainissues NOTE: Due to EVERYONE having supply chain issues, if there is a sprint spike that is  not available, runners can use a middle-distance spikes instead (see below) or we have also brought in several Cross Country Spikes as an additional option. (see below for our recommendations).

Middle-Distance (multi-event) Spikes

One of the most universal set of spikes for most every event are the middle-distance spikes.  These spikes are still very lightweight, and will have a flexible bottom plate with a much more padded heel for greater cushioning. The middle-distance spikes will allow for a more natural running motion. They are less rigid than sprint spikes and the spike plate is not as far forward on the toe which will allow for more comfort.

This is the most diverse spike as a sprinter can use a middle-distance spike, and also use for some of the multi-events like long jump and hurdles. We often recommend the middle-distance spike to a new track athlete or an athlete who doesn’t necessarily know what event they will be competing in.  A middle-distance spike would also work well for athletes competing in multiple events, and do not want to buy more than one pair of spikes.

These spikes are good for any running event, but are designed for the 800m to 3200m distances. Other events that this spike can be used for 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m, 3200m, All Relay Races, Long Jump, High Jump, Triple Jump, Hurdles, Pole Vault.

#supplychainissues NOTE: Due to EVERYONE having supply chain issues, if there is a sprint spike that is not available, runners can use a middle-distance spikes instead (see above), or we have also brought in several Cross Country Spikes as an additional option. (see below for our recommendations).

Special Note

#supplychainissues Due to supply chain issues, we have brought in and brought back several Cross Country Spikes.  These differ in that their entire sole is rubber, so slightly heavier and more flexible.  They also feature the padded heel, so they are similar to Middle Distance and Distance track spikes.  But they can be used for any event (except throwing).

An advantage of a Cross Country spike is that if the athlete is interested in Cross County in the Fall, this shoe will work for that. Just make sure that you take out the long Cross Country spikes and put in shorter track spikes to make them legal. Track shoes do not make good Cross Country spikes. This is due to cross country spikes having a rubber bottom and track spikes have a hard plastic spike plate that will slip on wet or non-grassy areas.

Cross Country Spikes:

Brooks Draft XC spike that can be used for track with shorter spikes

The Brooks Draft XC is a cross country spike that has a wider midsole for more stable landings. Are spikes mandatory?

The Running Well Store Gurus get asked this question quite often. We all would answer that an athlete does not need track spikes to compete in Track and Field.  But a runner, especially a new runner, needs a good pair of training shoes.  These shoes will be worn everyday at practice and most of their running will be done in these shoes.  A lot of throwers wear basketball, court shoes, or cross-training shoes to throw in. At The Running Well Store, we fit the shoe to the runner to make sure they are in a shoe that is right for them.  You can come into one of our three locations (Lee’s Summit, Northland and Mission, KS) for a free stride analysis. No appointment is necessary, but if you would like to schedule an appointment, click here.  We take in-person and virtual fittings.  Want to do research online?  We have a find my fit tool that will help you narrow down footwear options.

20% off discount for a limited time only for track & cross country

If you shop in-store at any one of our three locations through the end of March, we offer a student discount of 20% off to athletes in middle and high school, and The Running Well Store will guarantee our shoes for 30 days.

We hope to  hear from or see you soon! As always, Run Well!!

About TRWS GURU Hilary

Barry Road TRWS Fit Guru Hilary Graves

Hilary started running in high school, and took some time off in her 20’s, but then went through a divorce in her 30’s and decided to get back at it and hasn’t stopped.  She has run multiple 5k’s, then moved to running a butt load of 10k’s (sweet spot distance).  After getting the long distance bug decided to run her first 1/2 Marathon, Rock the Parkway in 2013. Her first (and LAST) full marathon in Lincoln, NE in 2015. She has also run several ultra-marathon’s and a 50 miler. Over the past several years will run a destination 1/2 Marathon with her 2 sisters each year. So, far her favorite has been the Nike Women’s 1/2 Marathon in DC. She joined The Running Well Dream Team at the Barry Road location in 2019, and plans to be a “lifer,” for sure.
