On Running’s “Monster”

On Running has recently launched its Cloud Monster and I am here to tell you what to expect from this shoe.

First off, On Running has had a reputation of being a firm and stylish footwear brand.  I am happy to report that while keeping the very attractive aesthetic the brand typically carries, it is a plush and fun run. It is about time!

Honestly speaking, this is likely my favorite shoe of the year. There should be a caveat here as it is still early in the season and many great shoes will be coming out this summer. I’m looking at you Brooks Glycerin.

How is it plush?

The On Running Monster lives up to its name with max cushioning yet still a fun, responsive feel.  This max cushion and responsive feel can be attributed to three factors:

  • The midsole material is constructed from On Runnings Helion Super Foam. The Helion Super Foam is big on rebound, temperature resistance is lightweight and durable.
  • Ten Cloud Pods (the most ever for On Running). The cloud pods are the core technology that all On Running Shoes have in common, it allows cushioning individually and as a unit provides cushion to your unique movements.
  • The speed board technology mixed with the Helion Super Foam Clouds makes the shoe much more responsive, fun and springy.

How On Running Does Max Cushion

In addition to these key technology features, On Running has provided a bit of a rockertype geometry to this shoe. This rocker is designed to help guide you through your stride and is great for both heel and forefoot strikes.  This rocker shape is commonly found in many Hoka shoes and as a Hoka Clifton runner, this shoe is very similar but better looking and more fun run.

The Upper

The upper has a gusseted tongue, which means it is attached to the top of the shoe preventing the tongue from sliding back and forth in your shoe. The laces lie flat and tie down nicely.  The shoe has a nice, padded heel counter, which will be comfortable for those who tend to slip in the shoe or whose Achilles is easily agitated.

Overall, I have walked, travel, ran outdoors (multiple times) and on a treadmill. I will certainly put this fun shoe into my frequent rotation of running shoes.

This shoe is lightweight, has great cushioning, is very responsive and is a good looking shoe.  It is a fun run that you will enjoy.  I am glad that On has finally produced a shoe that we can pull for clients when we pull  the Brooks Glycerin, Hoka Clifton and New Balance 1080.

Dislikes

I had to size up a half size and because they have missed the mark on the sizing the toe box is a bit roomy.  I love a roomy toe box, however people with a narrow foot may be turned off.

I am not a huge fan of the thin tongue.  I think that individuals who have sensitivity on the top of their foot will easily feel the laces, especially if they need to lock down the laces due to the wider forefoot.

The price.  While the Hoka Bondi is $160 and this is clearly going to chip away at the Hoka Bondi market share, I worry that the $170 sticker may be off-putting to some individuals.
