Brooks Ghost 14 Review
‘Run Happy’ With 100% Loft DNA Cushioning
Brooks running shoes are our top selling running shoes at The Running Well Store so whenever a new shoe from this brand hits our shelves – it is a big deal! Brooks became a go-to staple shoe for runners, walkers and those who are on their feet all day because they have been in business long enough to know the importance of investing in technology. Brooks Running got its start in footwear all the way back in 1914 but it wasn’t until the Munich Olympics of 1972 that running footwear took off for the brand. And in 2018 Brooks introduced its DNA Loft technology, now available throughout the entire Ghost 14.
What is Loft DNA?
Loft DNA Cushioning is the softest midsole material that Brooks Running utilizes. It is a balance of foam, air and rubber that disperses impact away from the body so that runners and walkers are offered a plush ride that does not sacrifice responsiveness or durability.
This bouncy, soft Loft DNA Cushioning in the Ghost 13 was just in the heel to help with shock absorption on landings. However, the new Ghost 14 takes that five star Loft DNA technology from heel all the way through the toe so you can fly through your transitions.
Speaking of transitions, Brooks combined a Segmented Crash Pad with the Loft DNA to allow for an easier flow from landing to toe-off. The segmented crash pad is a system of fully-integrated shock absorbers that accommodate the foot landing to maximize efficiency and create a smooth heel-to-toe transition. At Brooks Running, their goal is to make the runner or walker not even notice the transition.
And that upper!
The Ghost 14th wouldn’t be complete without a dialed in upper. Brooks has launched this version with their 3D printed upper to balance the stretch and structure of the shoe. Additionally, Brooks improved the fit throughout the heel collar for a secure, locked-down fit. We really like the padded tongue and cushioned heel collar on this shoe as it fits snug and comfortably but not tight.
And It’s Carbon Neutral!
More miles. Less impact. The Ghost 14 is Brooks Running first carbon neutral shoe! It’s a soft, light ride, now with an even lighter footprint. Through Brooks ‘Climate Action’ program, they are committed to first reducing emissions and then offsetting the rest. It’s one more stride toward net zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Now, for the opinion part
The Brooks Ghost 14 is a fan favorite and an award winning shoe for good reason. It is comfortable and fits well. To be honest, I have not ran in a pair of Ghosts in a long time so I was excited to be able to demo the shoe. The first few miles of every run that I took these out on I noticed the gentle softness underfoot and the smooth transition as I toed off. It was a perfect balance of soft but responsive. But what I most realized when I got done from my run is that I had to concentrate on how the shoe felt. It was such a comfortable ride that I often found my mind wondering from thinking about the shoe to thinking about my day, my problems and how awesome I was feeling in the moment. I guess this is a sign of a good shoe, one that you forget is even on your feet – even when its your job!
Who Is This Shoe Good For?
This is a neutral plush shoe that is a great every day trainer. While going through the The Running Well Store’s fit process, or Stride Analysis, I would not hesitate to pull this shoe for a wide variety of people. The Ghost 14 is a great shoe for someone who is just beginning their running journey (Newbie Runners we see you!). Because of the plush feel and the seamless transition, I would also recommend this shoe for our clients who are training for longer runs. We do carry the Ghost 14 in Men’s Wide and Women’s Wide, making it a fantastic option for those who need a little bit more space in their shoe.
Who Is This Shoe NOT Good For?
The Ghost 14 is a great shoe for a wide variety of people, which is why it is such a top selling shoe. This is a neutral shoe so those who are looking for traditional support or guide rails we would guide them towards the Adrenaline. Its a great shoe as it is not too soft and not too firm, however if you are looking for a super pillowy feel, we may recommend something else. Additionally, this is not a racing flat but more of a workhorse, everyday trainer.
