Rebel v5 Review

Introduction

There’s rumors swirling about the freshly dropped New Balance Rebel v5 staging a full-on coup  against basic trainers and it being the shoe to do it all, so I’m here to clear up the confusion. Not only did they launch the most stylish new colors from angora to urgent red- a true revolution in running fashion– the new version also comes armed with some game-changing updates to the shoe’s functionality. If I had to choose four words to describe the Rebel v5, I’d call it: comfortable, lightweight, versatile, and clean. It’s basically an uprising underfoot. Let’s get into what makes the Rebel so rebellious.

Warning: the Rebel v5 may result in illegal paces

New Balance Shoes in Kansas CityThe Upper

The upper saw major improvements over the last version, delivering a much more comfortable running experience. Here are the main features of the version 5 upper:

  1. Fantom Fit Technology: The Rebel v5 features a Fantom Fit upper that provides lightweight structure without the irritation of seams.
  2. Additional Padding: Version 5 came out with additional padding around the heel and tongue (did I mention it has a gusseted tongue?!) to prevent rubbing and improve comfort.
  3. Overall Feel: The mesh upper creates a solid, but breathable, feel that keeps you focused on reaching your goals ahead.

The Underfoot

When designing the Rebel v5, New Balance followed the mantra, “look fast, run fast” to create a more responsive and comfortable version of the well loved Rebel. I have to say, this version really exceeded all the expectations I had for it. While maintaining the lightweight but speedy experience of the older version, New Balance added some components to the underfoot to help it feel more responsive. Here’s what I found to have changed in this new release:

  1. Foam: New Balance combined PEBA and EVA foam to create a lightweight yet explosive feel underfoot, and this version features even more cushioning than the v4.
  2. Tread: The v5 offers better forefoot rubber traction for added durability and a more secure grip during longer runs.
  3. Rocker: The redesigned midsole creates a more noticeable rocker feel to help propel you forward each step.

Running in the Rebel v5 feels light and smooth. The updated FuelCell foam gives a soft, bouncy ride that’s cushioned enough for daily miles, but energetic for faster workouts. Transitions feel natural, with just the right amount of rocker to help propel you forward. The new version looks especially stylish, making your runs look and feel rebellious. The rebel v5 may just be the shoe to do it all.

Who Is the Rebel v5 For?

The Rebel v5 combines versatile performance with a sleek, modern look, and will help you crush your running goals. I’d recommend this to those looking for:

  • Everyday miles: This is a great everyday trainer option for all types of runs.
  • Speed Workouts: This shoe has enough bounce to it to make it a great option for those faster paced runs. The foam feels bouncy, but not mushy perfect for workouts.
  • Long runs: With more cushioning than before, this version feels especially comfortable for higher-mileage days.
  • All-day wear: Imagine long days walking around the city in a lightweight, but well cushioned shoe that will match just about any outfit. This just about sums up the rebel v5.
  • Those Who Heel Strike: This shoe feels better for heel strikers thanks to its softer, thicker heel cushioning, wider and more stable landing platform, and gentle rocker feel.
