A special thanks to the following publications for showcasing The Running Well Store.
KC Business Journal:
Responsibilities: As owner, Gates oversees the entire operation and sets its strategic direction. She manages relationships with employees, customers and vendors, ensuring that The Running Well Store offers leading-edge innovations and creates advocates for its brand.
Hero: Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon. The prestigious race had been an all-male event when, in 1967, Switzer entered under her initials. Partway through the run, the race manager tried to rip off Switzer’s bib and push her off the course — many people at the time thought women were too fragile to run such a far distance. Switzer’s boyfriend pushed the director away from her, and she completed the 26.2 miles.
“I admire her because she went against the grain. She changed the direction of sports.” Five years later, women were allowed to run the Boston Marathon.

It just had that great hometown feel, and I also liked its proximity to a lot of freeways,” said Kathy Gates, the owner of Running Well Store.
That homey feel is why Gates chose Mission to open her third specialty running store in the metro. On Thursday nights, they host a free run through town, which is an important path in creating a sense of community.
“Community is so incredibly important. It’s really easy to go online and shop or go to Dick’s and shop. We want to be someplace where you come in and instantly feel welcome, no matter your goals. We want to connect with each one individually and want to see you succeed,” Gates said.

What’s on your KC postcard? I really love all the KC pride T-shirts that are on the market right now. I would like to grab a bunch from Charlie Hustle, Normal Human and Bandwagon, and then patch them all together for a cool, KC-pride collage-esque postcard.
Finish this sentence: “Kansas City got it right when …” We started First Fridays!
“Kansas City screwed up when …” They built 71 Highway with stoplights. And didn’t keep Billy Butler.
